Chelmsford Morris dance the traditional morris dances of three areas of England: the men perform dances from the Cotswolds and (in the winter) the Welsh borders. The women’s dances come from the north-west of England. The Eagle joins us when we dance out, to commemorate the Roman origins of Chelmsford, and as a reminder of the Eagle standard captured heroically from Napoleon’s army by the Essex Regiment. We try to preserve the spirit and traditions of the Morris in our performance. It is said that dropping a few coins in the collection box will bring you good luck and fertility in the year ahead! If you would like us to dance at your fair, wedding, festival or other special event, please contact the Bagman. We would be pleased to hear of any recollections or pictures of the pre-war side, or of the present sides in their earlier days. If you have any photographs or you find press cuttings, we would welcome a copy for our archives. For a short, potted history of morris dancing, click HERE |
